Finding Your Style

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

Your martial art is an expression of you. In order for it to become your martial art, and not just a martial art you do, it not only has to be customized to your body type, but to your personality as well. Are you more vibrant or reserved? Social or to yourself? Are you fiery and aggressive or calm and cool? Do you play it soft and surprise the opponent or do you come out like a thunderclap and finish quickl? do you laugh a lot or are you more serious? Everything has a frequency, a vibration, and a feeling; and it’s no different with fighting styles and martial arts. I myself am naturally very colorful and creative, and I like a little flash and exciting presentation. by being this aware and honest with yourself will allow you to trust your body will use the right technique when needed. If it’s you, then you don’t have to try to be something, you already are. A martial art is a blueprint. It’s a layout of how to properly use physics, but people mistake that for a limiting parameter, when there is more creative freedom then you realize; and actually should utilize. We forget that if we aren’t adapting something to us, then we are most likely adapting to it, and either losing or limiting ourselves. I think of it being like a fluid dialogue; some give and some take. There are no useless techniques; only misused and mistimed ones. just Like a comedian can come in many forms- from direct one-liners, to well-developed stories; but each finds a way to present humorous conclusions that entertain and generate laughter. You have to find what works for you. Timing is everything. The same words can be said for different audiences, but the results of how they are received are heavily based on the timing of when they are used. A punchline delivered at the wrong time is much like a punch thrown out of range; it doesn’t make impact. The ultimate in 3-D chess, and you are every piece. I find a good way to examine this concept further is to look at all of the hobbies, music, books, clothes, food that you enjoy, and . think about what times you enjoy them and when you don’t. for example, you may enjoy coffee to wake up in the mornin, but coffee isn’t the best choice when trying to get ready for bed. And so it is with martial art’s techniques and how you put them together.
